Chapter Eight
Jenny walked to the west towards the picnic table and stared at the trees. All of the branches were tangled together. She wasn't interested in anything still attached to a tree so she looked at the ground. She almost smiled when she saw that there were lots to pick from. Now she was afraid that there would be something on, or under the one that she picked. A snake shaped something that'd bite her was not the kind of encounter she was looking for tonight.
Not wasting anytime, she picked up a good sized branch. It looked good enough for her and she started to look for the next one. She kept looking back to make sure she could still see the cabin and started to feel comfortable out here, as comfortable as she got outside anyway. She started picking similar branches at a pretty good pace now, but still being careful with each one just in case something was waiting.
As she did a loud crack came from behind her, something big clearly broke a branch and she was sure it wasn't her who broke anything that would make that much noise. âOh God, no,â she whispered to herself, imagination beginning to run wild with images of horrible things.
Jenny turned around only to seen nothing but more trees, but only a mere ten feet away from her on the ground laid a dead, thick log that had been broken as if something big had just stepped on it.
This log, there was no way she could have picked it up on her own or broken it. She thought about asking if anyone was there, but decided it was smarter to get back to the cabin with what little wood she had and not worry if it was enough or not. The silence was overpowering. Being alone out here, even if it was just for a few minutes was proving to be too much for her to take.
âScrew the hot dog, I'm out of here,â she said to herself and started to make her way back to the cabin.
Mia walked straight back in the direction they came from and into the woods. She looked around and the silence wasn't so bad. With all the yapping the others did it was actually a bit comforting.
She grabbed a long branch and twisted it off, snapping it with ease. The cracking noise seemed to echo in all directions making it sound as if hundreds of branches were being broken at once. âYep, that dog is mine,â she said with a smile and snapped another one off and stuck it under her left arm.
The dry, dead wood snapped with ease as she tore one branch off right after another. Then she stopped. She sniffed the air and the scent was whiskey, and strong too. But the scent was off, somehow. She was used to that kind of a smell but this was different, older, something from another time maybe but it was impossible to be sure.
